Full-strength La Grande holds off DeSales comeback bid

WALLA WALLA — After a winter filled with scoring baskets and running down the hardwood floor, La Grande saw those athletes begin their quest Tuesday — a quest in a new sport known for scoring runs and running the bases. The remaining basketball players yet to see the diamond joined the Tigers varsity baseball team Tuesday, leaving quite an impression in their first game, helping defending state champion La Grande defeat DeSales, 13-9. Leading the way at the plate for the Tigers was Anthony Nice (3-for-4), Nolan Mills (2-for-2, 2 runs) and Josh Yundt (1-for-1, 2 RBI). Cody McKague scored four runs, as well. It was the first game in cleats and stirrups for McKague and Zach Nice, and they joined basketball teammates Anthony Nice, Kevin Boyd and Yundt. “It was nice to see,” La Grande assistant coach Todd Shaffer said, adding that the practices of the returning basketball players have been “real limited.” But the poise and confidence of those players took over in this one. La Grande scored three runs in the opening inning, and built a 13-2 entering the seventh. That was when DeSales ripped off seven runs of its own. So how confident was Shaffer in the seventh inning, when DeSales brought seven runners across the plate? Was he feeling scared? “Not really,” Schaffer said. “We were pretty confident. “(The Tigers) are used to handling that situation. They geared up when they needed to.” Next for La Grande is Seaside at 2 p.m. Monday in the Salem Tournament.
