About 12 members of the La Grande High School football team volunteered Friday afternoon to move a new 12 x 183 foot, 1,200-pound carpet onto the first floor of Inlow Hall at Eastern Oregon University.
Greg Moulton, senior tight end and outside linebacker, said the old carpet was nasty.
"The college is going to have nice, new carpet," he said.
La Grande head coach Randy Waite said the team was "looking for a way to give back to the community."
Waite said it was tough to get help on a Friday afternoon, but the ones who did show up wanted to take part.
"We got a great bunch of kids," he said.
Tanner Boslau, junior linebacker, said it was a good fund-raiser for the booster club.
Brent Moulton, La Grande football booster club president, told Matt Graves, Eastern Oregon facilities and planning director, that the football team could install the carpet as a fund-raiser and do a nice job.
Moulton, who works at Fashion Floors/Carpet One, donated $1,000 to football for helping out with the carpet.
Moulton said the club has raised $2,000 of its $10,000 goal. The club reached its goal of $10,000 last year.
It took the boys about an hour to rip up the old carpet and haul in the new one Friday. The job will be completed today.
Moulton said he hopes people realize the team does more than play football.
He said he wants people to get excited about football but at the same time get involved and become aware of what the team does in the off-season.
"Not just a gimmie, gimmie thing," he said, laughing.
The next fund-raiser is the golf tournament Aug. 10.
Moulton said the club is contacting sponsors and seeking help now.
