Doug Lewis knew his Powder Valley boys track and field team was a lock for the District 4-1A title.

His girls team title, however, was a pleasant surprise.

Powder Valleys girls edged Spray, 107-103, and joined the Badger boys as District 4-1A track and field champions Friday.

Powder Valleys senior-dominated boys team had won three straight district titles and nobody challenged it for a fourth. The Badgers won all but three events and had the top two finishers in four events.

Everything went according to plan, coach Doug Lewis said. The kids did what they needed to to get to state, where I hope well have more competition. We dont have much competition at these types of meets.

Powder Valley did set a few records. The 1,600 relay team, in the day-long meets penultimate race, set a Class 1A record of 3 minutes, 26.27. Eli Bingham set a Class 1A record of 13 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault. And Zach Culver broke the school record in the high jump with a winning mark of 6-4.

Aaron Kerns set the school record of 6-4 in 1998.

Ive been trying to get (the record) all year, Culver said. Ive cleared 6-3 (in practice) before and 6-2 a lot of times.

The Badgers had four multiple winners, including distance runner Stephen Lewis in the 1,500 and 3,000. Lewis won the 1,500 in 4:28.84, but he wasnt happy with that time.

I was a little frustrated from my 1,500, he said. He started out his 3,000 fast but misread his watch after the first lap and thought he had run a 77-second lap instead of a 67-second lap. So he powered down the backstretch at sprint speed before letting up.

I didnt realize I was going that fast, he said.

Riley Martin won the 100 (12.25) and 200 (23.70), Brody Turner won the 400 (52.69) and 800 (2:05.92) and Jeremy Maddox won the 300 hurdles (40.81) and the long jump (20-3).

The Badgers also won the 400 relay in 44.46. Ryan Browne won the 110 hurdles in 18.29 and Trace Baxter topped the triple jump in 40-2.

The Powder girls had winning marks from Joelle Bain in the 100 (14.30) and 200 (27.45) and Amanda Bingham in the 300 low hurdles (47.77). The Badgers also won both relays.

Coach Lewis was impressed with Shaunna Nelsons second-place, state-qualifying time in the 800 (2:33.57).

For a freshman, thats pretty good.

Coves girls finished third with 90 points and wins from Lisa Scheele in the long jump (16-6) and Kathy Mann in the pole vault (7-6).

Scheele also qualified for state in the triple jump with a second-place mark of 35-8 and in the 400 with a second-place time of 1:04.44.

I really wanted to qualify (for state) in my three events, Scheele said. I ended up getting a personal record in both my jumps.
