ISLAND CITY Jack Grant and Casey Fenwick manned the camera and took team pictures. Chris Wagner, Justin LaPrelle and Jacob Simonis helped cook the hot dogs. Weston Weaver collected the balls during the putting contest.
They were just a handful of La Grandes High School football team who assisted Saturday in the third annual booster club Golf Tournament at the La Grande Country Club.
The tournament drew 76 golfers, who had plenty of prizes to play for on the 18-hole course, including a seven-day Caribbean Cruise for two, a set of Ben Hogan Apex Plus irons, a $10,000 cash prize, and two round trip airline tickets.
In turn, the booster club raised $10,000 for the LHS football team, which will go toward improving equipment.
Its been growing every year, golf committee member Jeff Weaver said.
The Tigers players helped by greeting tournament participants, acting as valets, carrying clubs to the carts and escorting people to their carts.
Fenwick, a senior running back, was impressed by the support for the team.
I think its awesome, he said. It gives us a lot of help and new equipment. I was surprised we had 76 (come out). There were only supposed to be 50 or 60.
Simonis added that the high school should have put a team or two together to join the foursomes who participated. But he didnt want to be one of those on the high school team. Id suck, he said.
La Grande first-year head coach Randy Waite was excited about what the booster club was doing to help raise funds and promote the program.
Weve got a great booster club. Theyre working really hard, he said. Its a good volunteer group. The money they raised today will go to promote football, replace old equipment and get our eighth grade program back.
