Strong individual performances highlighted the annual La Grande Invitational track and field meet.

Elgins Amber Looslie won three sprint events. Unions Sarah Bomberger won two throwing events. And La Grandes Kristin Brogdon won a strong high jump field that included Looslie. And that was just the girls.

Brody Turner of Powder Valley won the 200 and 400 meters. Brandon Burgess of Elgin set a school record in the 800. La Grandes Skyler MacDonald won his second-straight javelin. And the Tigers had the top two runners in the 3,000.

All that on a day when the weather cast clouds and some rain over the meet.

We pretty much pretended that we had a meet in the Willamette Valley today, La Grande coach Joe Sandoz said.

Brogdon was two inches short of her personal record in the high jump, winning at 5 feet, 1 inch. Enterprises Maya Waldron hit 5-0 on a later jump, with Looslie also ending up at 5-0. Powder Valleys Amie Russell and La Grandes Kathryn Ely both reached 4-10; at many meets 4-10 would win the high jump.

Looslie continued her domination of the sprints, setting a school record of 59.90 seconds in the 400. She also won the 100 in 13.58 and the 200 in 27.58.

Bomberger won the shot put at 32 feet, 51/2 inches and the discus at 97-11.

Turners winning time in the boys 200 was 23.82, and he won the 400 in 51.16. Burgess set an Elgin school record of 2:00.99 in the 800. MacDonald won the javelin for the second-straight time with a throw of 149-7, 20 feet shorter than his winning distance at last weeks Carnival of Speed in Milton-Freewater.

La Grandes boys dominated the 3,000, with Travis Dixon winning in 10:17.58 and Dane Johnson taking second at 10:22.21.

Nobody set a meet record, although Elgins Deleah Wiles came close, just missing a record 10 feet, 4 inches in the girls pole vault. Wiles won the event at 10 feet.
