GRIFFITH FINISHES THIRD, FIFTH IN HURDLES

EUGENE Eric Griffith completed his La Grande High School hurdling career with a third-place finish Saturday.

The Tigers senior missed out on second place in the 110-meter high hurdles by a hair, finishing in 15.29 seconds. The time tied second-place Tyler May of Siuslaw and Riversides Keith Bakers winning time of 14.86.

It came down to the thousands of a second, La Grande coach Joe Sandoz said.

Sandoz was pleased with how well Griffith rebounded from his Friday preliminary races in both hurdling events. He was fifth in the 110 hurdles at 15.81 and eighth in the 300 hurdles at 41.69.

The way he qualified Friday, running one of his slower times (of the season), turned out to be a stimulus for his turnaround (Saturday), Sandoz said. Hes been famous for his slow starts, so it was great to see him do well in the finals.

In the 300 hurdles finals, Griffith took fifth with a 40.22 in another tight race won by Rainiers Luca Setere in 39.20.

Griffith gave La Grandes boys team 10 points, good for a five-way tie for 22nd place. Seaside won with 48.5 points, followed by Philomath at 46 and Wilsonville with 45.

On the girls side, Jessyca Barker, who finished seventh Friday in the 3,000, placed 15th in 5 minutes, 10.33 seconds in the 1,500.

Barker earned La Grandes two points for a four-way tie for 40th place.

Kristin Brogdons 5-foot high jump tied her for 12th place with Michelle Klaja of Henley.

There was a significant group of girl jumpers in the 3A this year (jumping) 5-2 and a few above that, Sandoz said. Kristin had a couple of good jumps and were excited about her potential for the future.

Chelsea Malone finished her high school career with a personal best in the pole vault at 8-6, three inches better than last weeks winning Greater Oregon League district-meet mark. She finished 13th.
