The 4A Hermiston boys overpowered La Grande in the second half en route to a 72-44 non-league basketball win Tuesday.

Hermiston's Mark Carollo scored 21 of his 31 points in the second half. Carollo drained three of six 3-pointers in the third quarter.

Carollo's third 3-pointer opened up a 39-21 lead to put the Bulldogs in control in the third quarter.

La Grande coach Aaron Mills said the Tigers had a good first half because they were rebounding the ball.

The differences in the second half were defense and free throws, he said.

With the Bulldogs leading 19-14, Hermiston held on to the ball with 4:20 remaining in the second quarter. They waited until the final seconds to make a move to the basket, but an offensive foul was called giving the ball back to the Tigers with 4.4 seconds.

La Grande's Rick Anderson missed a shot, and the half ended with the score 19-14 in the Bulldogs' favor.

Before the Bulldogs held the ball, they had five points in the quarter, while the Tigers managed three.

The Bulldogs stayed in front of the Tigers in the third quarter. They built a 31-21 lead off Carollo's second 3-pointer in the third.

Anderson paced the Tigers with 10 points.

The Tigers (2-1) will play in the Red Lion Classic in Pendleton Thursday through Saturday.
