Concordia used the long ball a lot Friday to sweep its baseball doubleheader against the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers.

The Cavaliers belted out nine home runs in the two games, winning 13-1 and 11-8 in 11 innings.

While the Mountaineers managed just three hits against Concordia pitcher Chris Saywers in the first game, Eastern rallied in the second game only to fall hitless again.

I was proud of them, especially after the first game and not getting a whole lot done, Eastern coach Wes McAllaster said. We had chances, but just didnt get it done.

Seven of Concordias home runs came in the second game and contributed to 10 of their 11 runs. The final blows came in the 11th inning. Chris Baird led off with his seventh home run of the season. After Justin Krueger reached on a fielding error, Michael Devaney hit his second home run of the game.

The three runs came off Eastern pitcher Rick Sutton, who had relieved starter Jay Ferrell in the sixth and given up just four hits in his five innings before the 11th.

I probably stayed with him too long, but he was pitching so well, and weve got two (games) tomorrow, McAllaster said.

Eastern (2-12) trailed 8-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. A single by Griff McKay scored a run in that inning.

The Mountaineers tied it in the eighth. Dan Curfew scored on an error, then Scotty Tondevold drove in a run with a single to left field. A groundout by Justin Dosher brought home another run, and McKay singled home the final run to tie the game.

After that, however, Concordia pitcher Ron Landolt retired the final 11 batters he faced.

In the first game, Saywers went the distance, giving up three hits and two walks and striking out 10. McKay had two of those hits, going 2-for-3.

Easterns only run came in the fourth inning on a ground out by Kelly Hood.

The Mountaineers took a 2-1 lead in the first inning on a single by Brant Davis. After Concordia (10-19) built a 6-2 lead after its half of the fifth, Eastern added another run on a single by McKay.

The Mountaineers finish their weekend series with another doubleheader against Concordia at noon.
