ELGIN — La Grande didn’t play its best against the toughest team so far at the 11/12 All-Star Little League tournament Tuesday.

Walks and errors derailed La Grande’s waltz through pool play during a 19-7 loss to Harney County.

“We hurt ourselves,” La Grande manager Allen Childs said. “Our pitchers fell behind in the count, and the Harney County batters made them pay.”

La Grande led 2-0 before Harney County scored nine times in the second inning.

The hits kept coming for La Grande. Trenton Powers delivered three doubles.

Troy Williams connected for his third home run in three days.

La Grande trimmed an 11-2 deficit after three innings to four runs with one and half innings left to play.

“We hit the ball well, but didn’t get all the key hits we needed,” Childs said. “Harney County got out of some tough positions with minimal damage. We didn’t.”

Harney County put the game away with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The loss forces La Grande into a must-win situation. A win and La Grande advances to the semifinals. A loss means a playoff game with Union County.

La Grande and Milton-Freewater will square off at 3 p.m. today.

ELGIN — Joe Griffin and Kyle Johnson set the table, and the rest of the lineup feasted on the meal.

Union County kept its semifinal hopes alive with a 13-1 win against Milton-Freewater at the 11/12 All-Star Little League tournament Tuesday.

Griffin and Johnson — batting first and second in the lineup — reached base three times apiece. Both scored each time.

“They did a great job for us,” Union County head coach Steve Robertson said. “We haven’t been hitting the ball very well, but we did today. Getting those first two guys on makes everything a little easier.”

Casey Robertson earned the win on the mound. He struck out seven and walked one, allowing one run on two hits.

Union County will wait to find out its fate. If La Grande loses to Milton-Freewater today, Union County and La Grande would play a playoff game to determine the final semifinal spot.
