IMBLER BOYS RALLY TO BEAT PORTLAND LUTHERAN
IMBLER The Imbler Panthers had a wild shoot-out with Portland Lutheran Wednesday night, and picked the right time to dominate.
Imbler went into the fourth quarter down by four, but outscored the Bluejays 23-6 in the fourth to pull out a 74-61 2A state basketball playoff opener.
"It was a barnburner," said Imbler coach ken Kramer.
With defenders draped all over Imbler's leading scorer, Tanner McIntosh, all night, Alan O'Donald led the Panthers with 31 points. He hit four 3-pointers, was a perfect 3-for-3 on his free throws and pulled down nine boards. O'Donald scored 23 of his points in the first half.
"He had the game of his life," said Kramer.
McIntosh hit three 3-pointers himself, including two in that big fourth quarter, and ended with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Travis Hoskins scored 10.
The Panthers (20-5 overall) now go on the road to face Pilot Rock in a 2A second-round game Saturday. The good news for the Panthers they beat Pilot Rock in preseason by a score of 60-35.
However, Kramer said that Pilot Rock has a 6-foot-8 foreign exchange player, Frank Hoogesteger, who has been averaging 20 points a game of late. He only scored four against Imbler.
If Imbler wins Saturday, the Panthers will make a return trip to the 2A state tournament in Pendleton beginning March 4.
Imbler got off to a sluggish start against Portland Lutheran, falling behind 20-6 in the first quarter. Portland Lutheran came out firing on all cylinders and ended the first quarter up 25-18.
But, the Panthers dominated both even-numbered periods. Imbler roared back at the end of the first, then kept up the momentum with a 23-12 second quarter to take a 41-37 lead into the half.
The pendulum swung back Portland Lutheran's way in the third quarter as the Bluejays went on an 18-10 run to retake the lead.
Imbler's John McKinnis scored seven points, playing strong despite an appendectomy earlier this month.
The game featured 14 3-pointers combined by both teams. Portland Lutheran was led by Josh Dressler, who hit four 3-pointers and scored 25. However, Kramer said the Imbler defenders shut Dressler down in the fourth, allowing the Bluejays' big scorer just a single free throw in the quarter.
