The Imbler Panthers won their first baseball game in years, but they will have to wait for their second win.

Imbler thumped the Union Bobcats 17-4 in the first game of the doubleheader at Optimist Field but lost to Union 16-6 in the second game.

Both games ended early because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Union had 10 errors in the first game, and Imbler made seven errors in the second game.

Thats been fairly typical so far, Union coach Greg Poor said. Weve been coming out flat, and finding out why will be crucial to our season. Weve been playing great second games.

Imbler had a six-run second inning and a six-run fourth inning in the first game. The Panthers belted out nine hits, including three from Justin Volle.

Pitcher Jeff Smith limited Union to just four hits.

Its exciting to see that. Jeff Smith pitched a good game that first game, Imbler co-coach Monty McIntosh said.

In the second game, the Bobcats got to the Panthers early, scoring six runs in the first inning. Imbler committed three errors in that inning.

We changed it up, said Imblers other co-coach, Grant Crow, about his lineup. We should have entered them one at a time instead of trying it all at once.

Jeremy Shankel, Justin Colkitt and Matt Fiorito each had two hits for Union in that second game.

Imbler got back in the contest and cut Unions lead to 8-6 after the third inning. Three straight walks started Unions half of the fourth, however, and a throwing error, a ground ball and a wild pitch allowed the Bobcats to add three more runs.

Imbler scored in the first seven innings it played Saturday, but Union pitcher Lucas Maples shut down the Panthers over the final three innings of the second game.
