BAKER CITY — A quest many years in the making came to a fitting end at the Class 1A State basketball championships.

The Imbler girls basketball team did exactly what it set out to do this season — leave a legacy.

“That’s what the girls wore on the T-shirts we had made up,” Panthers head coach Barry Bowers said. “It's something great for this group of girls, and a fitting way for the seniors to go out.”

Chelsea Poe, Kira Poe, Reva West, Stephanie Anthony and Sarah Bowers-Ott ended their high school careers with a 26-0 season.

Imbler breezed passed Griwold in the state title game 66-37.

“Having already done it in volleyball it feels even more amazing,” Poe said. Basketball is completely different. We’ve been playing together since the fourth grade.

“This is something we’ve all been dreaming about since we first picked up a basketball.”

Its been a rivalry in the making for many years.

The Panthers defeated the Grizzlies the last two seasons for the state volleyball title.

Fresh off a defeat in Forest Grove three months ago the Griswold girls had to deal with Imbler once again.

“Its been a long rivalry,” Poe said. We’ve been playing these girls since about the fifth grade in AAU basketball. It’s gone back and forth. They’re a great group of athletes just like we are.

“They should be sick of seeing us these last couple of years.”

On Saturday, there wasn’t much doubt which team was the best.

Imbler’s defense made sure the game got out of reach quickly.

Ferocious is how Poe described her team’s defense in the championship game.

“We came out to try to get fear in their eyes. All of us wanted it, and you could tell from the get-go.”

Griswold shot 1-of-20 from the floor in the opening half, and trailed 20-2 with 4:32 left in the second quarter.

The Panthers played their usual game with everyone getting involved. Five players had at least four points and Imbler built a 25-10 halftime lead.

“We didn’t even look or hear the stats at halftime,” Poe said. It was all about playing our game. We knew if we did that, that we would come out on top.”

Imbler pushed the lead out to 27 points in the second quarter, and didn’t look back. The Panthers shot 64 percent from the floor in the closing half, to Griswold’s 34 percent.

“I’ve never seen these girls so focused,” Bowers said. They didn’t change up anything the whole weekend.

“It helped to be in this position last year. It took the edge off the girls this season. I asked them if they wanted to go out to dinner the night before or breakfast in the morning, and they said, “No, we got a job to do.’”

West, Anthony, Bowers-Ott and Poe each finished with 10 points.

Bowers-Ott added a team-high 12 rebounds.

Kira Poe scored eight points.

Demetria Thompson finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

Imbler out-rebounded Griswold 40-27 during the game, with a 22-14 advantage in the first half.

The Grizzlies’ Kylee Rogers finished with a game-high 16 points. She added eight rebounds.

Bowers isn’t ready to think of life without his talented group of seniors just yet

“I don’t want to even think about it right now,” Bowers said. “I’m still a little numb. I know when we do the awards banquet it’s going to be rough.

“This is where it all started with the AAU program. These girls helped build the program we have now. It’s a very special group of girls.”
