Imbler starts off on the right foot, Cougars clip Sherman

PASCO — Imbler picked up where it left off last season — winning. The Panthers defeated Tri-Cities Preps 40-36 Friday in the season opener. Imbler’s Dalton McDaniel picked off a Will Hoppes to end the game at Chiawana High School. La Grande High School transfer Wesley Burgess burst onto the scene for Imbler. Burgess rushed for 296 yards on 30 carries, and scored four touchdowns.Imbler will travel to Dufur Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Butte Falls tied the score with three minutes to play, capping a touchdown with Codey Myers’ two-point conversion pass to Harley Casillas. Casillas ran for 123 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and caught six passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. Powder Valley’s Trent Dixon scored five touchdowns — two receiving, one rushing, one on a punt return and another on an interception return. He also had seven receptions for 173 yards. Powder Valley will host Mohawk at 7 p.m. Friday.

But the Cougars did come out with a 44-12 win against Sherman. Tyler Harshfield propelled the Wallowa offense. The senior quarterback rushed for 207 yards and three touchdowns. He also picked up 239 yards through the air on 9-of-19 passing. Ronald Gladden hauled in five passes for 165 yards and two scores. Back-up quarterback Dusty McDaniel made the most of his one rush, going 45 yards for a score to close out the game. Wallowa will host St. Paul Friday at 2 p.m.

DUFUR — It wasn’t the opening game Cove hoped for. The Leopards fell to Mohawk 98-32 at the Dufur Classic Friday. “We got a little star struck, head coach Todd Shirley said. “Playing a top-notch team, we didn’t know what to expect. “We did some things right, but we also did some things wrong. As a coach you can only hope some of it was first-game nerves.” Scott Delcurto scored three touchdowns on the day. Two of his 19 rushing attempts ended in the endzone, and he tallied 72 yards on the ground. Cove quarterback Jered Witty connected with DelCurto on a 40-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Delcurto finished with 82 yards receiving on three catches. The Leopards will host Echo at 7 p.m. Friday.
