Wallowa boys win third straight 60-44

WALLOWA — At the beginning of the season, one wouldn't have thought the Wallowa basketball boys would be in a dogfight for first place in the Old Oregon League.

The Cougars struggled through the first month of the season, going 1-8 in non-league games. After Saturday, the boys are 4-1 in OOL play (5-9 overall), a half-game behind Cove for first place.

Wallowa beat Prairie City 60-44 Saturday for the Cougars' third straight win. Coach Gerry McLain said the boys are coming together as they get more experience.

"We started out the year with a bunch of young kids. They weren't used to playing varsity. They're starting to relax," he said.

Randy Spaur led the Cougars with 23, while Jeff Kendall had 13 and Kyle McDaniel 11.

The Cougars make a long road trip Friday to Jordan Valley. While the Mustangs are a traditional OOL power, they are down a bit this year, and Wallowa has shown it can win on the road.
