NYSSA When your pitcher throws a one-hitter, you would expect to win, right?

Josephs Dollen Stroup allowed just one hit Saturday against the Nyssa Bulldogs in the Eagles Wapiti League opener, but he gave up too many walks, and Nyssa came away with a 3-0 victory.

The Eagles got even in the second game, using three suicide squeeze bunts in the seventh inning to pull out a 6-0 win.

The doubleheader ended after Nyssas coaches had been ejected for arguing against a balk call in that final inning, which saw the Eagles score four runs and break open a close game.

We started forcing some errors by steals, Joseph coach Dave Schmidt said.

After Nyssas pitcher balked and the coaches were ejected, the Eagles sacrificed their runners to second and third. That started a trio of bunts with the runners running.

The first time, they didnt cover first base. The second time they tried to cover but they didnt get there in time, Schmidt said.

Willy Borgerding gave up one hit through four innings in the second game, and Wade Gleasman pitched the final three innings for the save.

Pat Lynn had two hits for Joseph (6-4 overall, 1-1 league) in the second game.

Schmidt was happy to get a split out of the doubleheader.

For having to play several young guys for having discipline actions (against others), I was really proud of them, Schmidt said.

Joseph plays Pilot Rock today, then returns to league action Saturday with a doubleheader against Pine-Eagle.
