JOSEPH'S FOUL TROUBLE HELPS REGIS ADVANCE

By Raenelle Kwock

Observer Staff Writer

PENDLETON Foul trouble and the Regis scoring duo of Travis and Tyler Lulay doomed Joseph in the first round Tuesday of the OSAA-U.S. Bank Class 2A Boys Basketball State Championships.

Regis handed Joseph only its second defeat in 27 games this season, 59-50.

The Lulay brothers had their way with the Joseph defense. Travis was Regis high scorer with 21 points, and Tyler added 19.

Joseph coach Ron Lathrop said the brothers made plays at both ends of the court.

Lathrop added that early foul trouble changed his teams rotations significantly. Starting center Levi Stubblefield picked up his third foul two minutes into the third quarter.

We need to be strong to rotate the right way, Lathrop said. That put us in a bind when he went out.

Then, with less than a minute left in the third quarter, Dollen Stroup fouled out for Joseph, with Regis leading 38-36.

Regis capitalized on turnovers and free throws. The Rams went to the free throw line 25 times, but Joseph only got there 11 times. Travis Lulay made 5-of-9 free throws and Tyler hit 7-of-9.

Regis had 15 points off Joseph turnovers.

Marcus Wells led Joseph with 16 points. Stubblefield had 14 points and seven rebounds.

Joseph played Heppner this morning in a consolation quarterfinal game. The Mustangs were pounded in their first round game by Westside Christian, 71-50.

Joseph beat Heppner 61-60 in overtime in the second game of the season Dec. 7.
