Kennedy too much for Bobcats

MOUNT ANGEL — Hard-hitting Kennedy Hight School ended the Bobcats’ season with a 9-4 victory Wednesday in the first round of the 2A/1A baseball playoffs.

Union/Cove was able to pick up an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning, but the Trojans were able to get to starter Ty Coon with a three-run second inning.

The Bobcats hung around, cutting into the 3-1 lead with a run in the top of the third, but Kennedy was able to blow things open with a six-run bottom half of the inning.

Union/Cove got two runs in the seventh inning, but the lead proved to be too much to overcome for the Bobcats.

Brenlon Moore finished one for three with an RBI.

Kaleb Poor was one for one with an RBI double but was hit by a pitch during his second at bat and was forced to leave the game.

Coon took the loss, going two innings, allowing three runs and walking three.

Franky Rodriguez got the win for Kennedy.

“They hit the ball reasonably well,” coach Greg Poor said of the Trojans.

“We just had one bad inning.”

The loss may end the season for the Bobcats, but Poor is pleased with how this year played out.

“I thought this was a great season. We’re a young team. To be able to claim part of the league title in a building year is a great accomplishment for these kids.”

The Bobcats lose three players to graduation.

Moore, Boss Parker and Marshall Short all move on, but the bulk of Union/Cove’s roster is expected back next season.
