The La Grande High School basketball teams rolled over Burns Saturday.

The girls (5-0, 12-3) knocked out Burns, 61-33. The boys (4-1, 7-9) hammered Burns 71-39 for its second consecutive Greater Oregon League win.

Tonight we did a good job executing our offense, said Isaac Williams, girls coach.

La Grande led 24-8 at the end of the first quarter. Lindsey Carmichael and Shalece Hibbert each sunk three 3-pointers in the quarter.

We were just more ready, something like that, Christie Weaver said.

Hibbert said the Burns players are tall, so they focused on taking away rebounds and running up the court for the easy fast break.

Five-foot-11 junior Chelsea Ross, Burns tallest player, was ineffective, scoring most of her points from the free throw line en route to 12 points.

We came out really strong, Carmichael said. We hit a lot of shots. Before we knew it, we had 24 points.

Carmichael said the team started intense, and it set a vibe throughout the team that led to a win.

At halftime, the score was 42-20. In the third quarter, Burns could not mount a comeback, scoring only seven points.

Carmichael scored 16 points for the Tigers, and Weaver added 15.

La Grande plays at Vale Friday.

SIMILAR WIN FOR BOYS

The La Grande boys took Burns out of its strategy early in the first quarter.

Coach Aaron Mills said Burns likes to hold the basketball and stall, so his team wanted to hit shots and have Burns play at La Grandes pace.

We needed to have a good first quarter, Mills said.

La Grande outscored Burns 16-9 in the first quarter.

Mills said Burns likes to kick the ball out to the post and get its guards to create shots, but La Grandes man-to-man defense confused them.

Greg Schuft scored six points and Tanner Mellinger had eight points in the second quarter, allowing La Grande to go into halftime with a commanding 39-17 lead.

Mills said Burns is a better team than it looked, but that Saturday wasnt their night.

Burns could not manage more than nine points in three of the four quarters. In the fourth quarter, Burns scored 16 points, but the game was out of reach.

Schuft and Mellinger each scored 13 points, and Seth Pennington had 12.
