LA GRANDE BOYS LOSE TWO AT STATE
The La Grande boys had trouble getting back in the game after a 40-minute rain delay, struggling in the field en route to a 19-1 loss Sunday night against Beaverton in the 13-Year Old Babe Ruth State Tournament.
La Grande played Beaverton tough early, but Beaverton took over after the rain delay.
La Grande was down just 2-1 after two innings, but had trouble with its defense on the wet field.
Cody Laurence had
La Grande's RBI. Laurence hit 2-for-2 in the game, while Nick Thompson and Kole Stein also had hits.
In Saturday's game,
La Grande also got off to a good start.
La Grande took a 1-0 lead after Jeremy Moore singled to left field to drive in a run with two outs in the bottom of the first inning.
Southeast Portland knotted the score at 1-1 with a run in the top of the second.
Southeast Portland took control in the third inning by scoring six runs on five hits.
Southeast Portland's Shane Brady was the game's winning pitcher, holding La Grande to one run over six innings.
La Grande coach Eric Yundt was pleased with how La Grande did overall. He said that his players hit the ball well.
"We had good contact but every time we hit the ball right at somebody,'' Yundt said.
Jeremy Moore, Carl Osborne and Nick Thompson each had hits for La Grande.
Yundt was pleased with his team's effort.
"I'm proud of this team. We don't give up,'' Yundt said.
The boys went 1-2 in pool play. Their victory was a dramatic come-from-behind 3-2 win over Astoria Friday.
The boys ended pool play as the No. 4 seed in their pool. They will play the No. 1 seed Gresham at 7 p.m. today.
