LA GRANDE BOYS WANT TO EARN A TROPHY AT STATE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
REDMOND There's room for improvement for La Grande at the OSAA-U.S. Bank Class 3A Boys Golf Tournament, and improvement could get them a trophy today.
La Grande was in fifth place after the first day of competition at the Eagle Crest Resort, just 12 strokes out of the lead.
La Grande's 333 was four strokes behind LaSalle's 329. Tillamook led the tournament with a 321, followed by Baker's 324 and Sisters' 327.
"We're doing OK. We're right in the middle of the pack," La Grande coach Don McAndie said.
Todd McAndie led La Grande with an 80, followed by Bill Waldrop's 82 and Tyler Tucker's 83. Willie Vaughn shot an 88 and Ricky Gloria had a 96.
Don McAndie said he felt each player could cut five strokes off their score.
"We can probably move up," he said. "Today, a lot of it was tournament jitters. Tyler and Todd are the only ones who've played a state tournament before. This is a big deal.
"If we can make the putts drop, I think we'll be right there."
