LA GRANDE DOESN'T FARE AS WELL AT STATE

EUGENE — The state meet isn't going as well as planned for the La Grande Tigers track and field team.

"We're having less success at the state meet than we did at the district meet," La Grande coach Joe Sandoz said after Friday's first day of the OSAA-U.S. Bank Class 3A Track and Field State Championships.

Only one of La Grande's runners qualified for today's finals in Friday's prelims. Johan Soderlund will race in the finals of the 400 meters after his best race of the season. His time of 51.11 seconds was 0.21 seconds faster than his previous best this season.

Soderlund missed qualifying for the 200, coming in fifth in the preliminaries (23.32). Chris Jones did not qualify for the 110 hurdles after coming in fifth in his heat (16.43).

On the girls side, Crystal Kevan and Kylee Winkler were unable to qualify for today's 400 final. Kevan ran the race in 1:02.94 and Winkler in 1:28.00.

The relay teams also did not qualify. The 4x100 relay team — Lindsey Carmichael, Amanda Schuft, Tammy Darval and Kylee Winkler — was fifth (51.92) in the heat. The 4x400 relay — Kevan, Malia Anderson, Carmichael and Amanda Timm — was seventh at 4:17.90.

In La Grande's only final Friday, long jumper Casey Fenwick leaped 20 feet, 11 inches for sixth place. Fenwick was the top seed coming into the event after a surprising leap of 22-3 1/2 at last week's Greater Oregon League meet in Vale.

"He just didn't get the big jumps he had last week," Sandoz said.

In addition to Soderlund in the 400, La Grande's Anderson will run in the 1,500 today. Kristin Brogdon will compete in the high jump and triple jump, while Skyler MacDonald will throw the javelin.

In Friday's other results, Danielle Jordan of Baker won the 3,000 in 10:18.18.
