After a tough preseason loss to Hermiston last Tuesday, the La Grande girls basketball team rebounded with a 88-37 preseason win over Nampa Christian Monday.

"It feels nice to know that maybe we're as good as we thought we would be," La Grande coach Isaac Williams said.

La Grande (1-1 overall) held a 12-0 lead after Christie Weaver's baseline jumper with 3:36 in the first quarter. Nampa Christian interrupted La Grande's offensive surge with two free throws at the 3:22 mark. By the end of the first quarter, La Grande's lead was 22-4.

Williams said La Grande bounced back and played unselfishly.

He said the team shot the ball as well as it is capable of doing, got rebounds and was getting out on the fast break.

"Offensively, it was great," Williams said.

Four La Grande players were in double figures.

Weaver led La Grande with 23 points. She beat the buzzer at the end of the second quarter with a lay-up and a three-pointer at the end of the third.

Amber Rasmussen scored 21 points for La Grande, hitting a two-pointer with three seconds left in the game for the final winning margin.

Teammates Lindsey Carmichael had 11 points and Jill Jensen 10.

Williams said he is proud of the team and whether it loses by 17 (Tuesday's loss) or wins by 51 (Monday's win), the team is getting better every game and it's a step in the right direction.

La Grande hosts The Dalles at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Hailey Brunel and Brittney Lee were Nampa Christian's top scorers with nine points.
