LA GRANDE GIRLS, BOYS NOTCH WINS OVER ONTARIO

By Raenelle Kwock

Observer Staff Writer

The La Grande Tigers (13-4, 6-1) rebounded from a tough loss Friday and beat Ontario 53-46 Saturday in Greater Oregon League girls basketball.

Stephanie Hawk of Ontario was a key factor. However, she fouled out with 4:37 left in the fourth quarter and Ontario lost the momentum.

Hawk finished with 19 points.

La Grande coach Issac Williams said Hawk is a great player, and her fouling out enable the Tigers to attack the basket.

Williams said in the first half, the Tigers played man-to-man defense but in the second half they switched to a zone to contain Ontario.

Both teams had bad third quarters as Ontario scored eight points and La Grande had six. However, La Grande outscored Ontario 23-14 in the fourth quarter.

Its tough, Williams said.

It was the second night in a row that the Tigers missed shots but put enough points on the scoreboard, Williams said.

Shalece Hibbert finished with 15 points and Christie Weaver had 12 to pace La Grande.

La Grande plays Grant Union Friday.

LHS BOYS WIN 73-61

Ontario was unable to keep up with the La Grande Tigers Saturday, losing 73-61 in Greater Oregon League boys basketball.

The Tigers (9-9, 6-1) were fresh in the second half, while Ontario was worn out.

Coach Aaron Mills said Ontario shot well in the first half, but their legs could not carry them in the second half.

Ontario had a 10-2 lead at the 4:32 mark of the first quarter but could not hold it for the rest of the game.

Seth Pennington scored nine points for La Grande in the second quarter. His last goal tied the score at 29 going into halftime.

The Tigers used an extended 2-3 zone to defend Ontarios outside shooting, and it wore Ontario down.

In the fourth quarter, Greg Schuft made two 3-pointers and s four free throws.

Schuft said it was a good win for the team because they held off Ontarios runs and it will prepare them for Grant Union Friday.
