LA GRANDE GOLFERS BEGIN PLAY
CLARKSTON The La Grande High School girls golf team improved on last years score at this years Clarkston Invitational at the Quail Ridge Country Club.
Led by Kelli Greenoughs 86 over 18 holes, La Grande placed sixth out of 19 teams with a team score of 387, an improvement of 55 strokes over last years 13th-place finish.
A couple of the girls were disappointed in their performance but they forget that this is just the beginning, La Grande coach Candy Brooks said.
It was a team consensus that definitely the short game, especially the putting, hurt them a lot, Brooks said. Since we play on temporary greens due to our weather, this is understandable.
Greenough was the sixth low gross player. Sommer Presley was next for La Grande with a 99, followed by Carrie Waldrop at 104 and Nicole Lewis at 108.
Brooks said Bess Buzzard was disappointed with her round of 112, but she knows what shes capable of.
BOYS ARE DISAPPOINTED
For a season-opener, the La Grande boys golf team did not like how it fared at the Clarkston Country Club.
We did horrible. We didnt fare very well on this opener. They didnt play like theyre capable of, La Grande coach Don McAndie said.
La Grande finished in the middle of the pack with a team score of 363. Bill Waldrop led the Tigers with an 84 on the par-72, 18-hole course.
He played right to his position today. He did real well, McAndie said.
Tyler Tucker was next for the Tigers at 90, followed by Willie Vaughn at 94 and Todd McAndie at 95. Justin Deal carded a 101, which for a freshman wasnt bad for him, coach McAndie said.
Still, McAndie recognized that the season had just begun.
This is always a really good experience, this tournament, he said.
