LA GRANDE SHUTS OUT PENDLETON
By The Observer
HERMISTON Adam Kleck came off three days rest and spun a shutout at the American Legion A Zone 1 East District Tournament Thursday.
Kleck, who pitched the first five innings for a win Monday, held Pendletons Daves Food Mart to three hits in seven innings as La Grande Rain Roofing won its district opener here at Shockman Field, 5-0.
The win was Klecks fourth of the season. He struck out three Pendleton batters and received some strong defensive support.
Aaron Thomas made a couple of great catches (in center field) that Pendleton fans thought would be hits, Rain Roofing manager Dave Mellinger said.
La Grande (18-9) also turned two double plays.
On the offensive side, Rain Roofing jumped to a quick lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning and adding two more in the third.
Zach Glasser used a leadoff single to set the offense in motion in the first inning. Drew Fischer followed with a single and Tanner Abel was walked to load the bases.
Ty Mellinger hit into a double play on the next at bat, but Dollen Stroup hit a two-run double.
In the third inning, Stroup doubled, Jason Smith hit a one-run single, Thomas singled and Shane Slover drove Smith in with a double.
La Grande added a run in the sixth inning when Kleck scored on an Abel single.
(Pendletons) pitcher wasnt very fast. Weve hit better off faster pitching, Dave Mellinger said.
I think if our players play the way they should, I dont see how we can not win this tournament, he added.
La Grande plays the Hermiston Heat at 2 p.m. today. If they win, Rain Roofing faces the winner todays Baker City/Milton-Freewater contest at 11 a.m. Saturday.
A loss would send La Grande into the playback bracket of the double-elimination tournament where it would play at 2 p.m. Saturday.
