Five hours and a few thousand snowflakes later, La Grandes tennis teams picked up Greater Oregon League wins over Vale.

With the snow flying outside, the Tigers received the benefits of playing in Easter Oregon Universitys tennis dome. The matches took longer, since only two courts were used. Usually, the Tigers have six outdoor courts at their disposal, too.

The shorter matches, but longer day, resulted in a La Grande girls 4-1 victory and 3-2 boys win. All matches were shortened from six points to four points to speed up play.

We had a lot of kids who played really well today, La Grande coach Mike Schireman said. I saw a lot less unforced errors. As a team, were improving.

Vale recently beat Baker, a program that La Grande struggled with last Tuesday.

John Woodfield, moved from his usual doubles spot, played as the No. 3 singles position with great success, beating Robby Seals, 4-1, 1-4, 4-0.

After losing the first set, he came back and played extremely well, Schireman said.

Schireman also credited the play of No. 2 singles player Trampus McCrae, who won in straight sets, along with No. 1 doubles team Greg Schuft and Tyler Lester.

Even though (Schuft and Lester) lost, theyre looking like a tough team in our league, he said.

Brooke Gerlach beat one of the hardest hitters in the GOL when she defeated Danielle Burgess, 4-2, 4-2.

(Burgess) is one of the toughest competitors Brooke has faced yet, Schireman said.

The Tigers No. 1 doubles team of Marianne and Katie Westenskow, who won 4-0, 4-0. They were really dominant, too, Schireman said.

La Grande hosts Pendleton in a non-league match Tuesday.
