The La Grande boys and girls kept up their winning ways at their swim invitational at Veterans Memorial Pool Saturday.

The girls defeated Pendleton by 55 points, while the boys edged out Pendleton by three points. Brenton Dowdy broke his previous school record in the 200 individual medley.

La Grande coach David Deming said there were a lot of best times on the girls' side.

He was extremely excited with the girls' 50 freestyle.

"Out of five girls, four had personal best times," he said.

The girls' 200 medley relay time was faster than last year's time. The 400 freestyle relay was a second off last year's time.

Valerie Butler won the 200 individual medley. Amy McMahan dropped four seconds in winning the 100 backstroke.

Britney Gray dropped time in the 500 freestyle as well as Nancy Binger in the 200 freestyle.

Matt Hibbert's 200 freestyle time puts him third all-time in the LHS Top 5, Deming said.

He said the boys' relays were strong again. The 400 freestyle relay was just a second under the state time.

Dowdy was "really strong" in the 200 individual medley, Deming said. Dowdy finished in 2 minutes, 3.62 seconds.

Deming said Peter Harris did a good job in the 50 freestyle and Daryl Sams dropped 30 seconds in the 500 freestyle.

Owen Kenton dropped a second off his best time in the 100 breaststroke and Thomas Esser was strong in the 100 breaststroke, he added.

"Overall, it was a good meet," Deming said. "I think the kids swam well."

The Tigers travel to the Baker Invitational Jan. 10.
