LA GRANDE TENNIS BOYS AND GIRLS DOMINATE HOME MEET

The La Grande tennis team tried something different and it worked Tuesday. Every game was a point in the singles competition. The doubles teams each played two games.

Helix, Echo and Stanfield played against the Tigers.

"We did it because of the number of kids," La Grande coach Mike Schireman said. "It worked out well. Everyone played.

"If you run a dual match, that's about all you can squeeze in. I don't think it was good for somebody like Aaron (Nebeker). "He's athletic and fit. The longer the match goes on, the stronger he gets."

Nebeker defeated John Magana of Echo, 5-3; then beat Alonzo Riveria of Stanfield, 5-3; before falling to Aaron Beamer of Echo 5-3. Nebeker racked up 13 points and was second behind Magana. The points are tallied from the number of games won.

"(Dan) Thurber played extremely well," Schireman said. "He dominated the No. 2s there."

Thurber beat Ruben Harris of Echo, 8-0; Ray Flores of Stanfield, 5-3; and Joey Marakgrah of Helix, 5-3. Thurber picked up 18 points and won the No. 2s.

Dan Jones and Sean Gregory beat Matt Wade and Matt Cook of Stanfield, 6-1, 6-0. Keaton Orton and Ian Gregory defeated the Stanfield No. 2s, Jason Flemer and Austin Garke, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

Jones and Sean Gregory beat Flemer and Garke, 6-0, 6-0. Ian Gregory and Orton beat the Stanfield No. 1s, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

"On the girls' side, we were pretty dominant in doubles here," Schireman said. "In fact, Stanfield won the tournament last weekend.

"Hilary (Girrard) and Haily (Hines) beat them. It will help with their confidence and help with their draw. It was a big win for them."

Girrard and Hines defeated the Stanfield No. 1s, Kyle Mitts and Danielle Weatherman, 7-5, 6-4.

Jennifer Hubbard and Nikki Nielsen beat Sam Vermillion and Melissa Shilhanek of Stanfield, 6-0, 6-0. Hubbard and Nielsen lost to Weatherman and Mitts, 6-2, 6-2.

Sarah Noyes and Teresa Kiemnec beat Vermillion and Shilhanek, 6-0, 6-0.

"Megan (Sherer) pretty much looking at her scores did really well," Schireman said. "Basically, she played against all No. 1s. She won by three points there. It says a lot for her and the direction she is moving in now."

Sherer tied Stacey Garcia of Echo, 3-3; beat Kelly Davis of Stanfield, 5-1; and beat Mandy Scott of Helix, 5-1. Sherer scored 13 points and won her division.

Bethany Herman beat Kim Keene of Stanfield, 7-5. Caitlin Schoenfelder beat Keene, 6-4.

The Tigers host Umatilla at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
