Stephanie Keith got off to a slow start in her singles match, but won 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. The La Grande tennis team will play in district at Tri-Cities May 16. ().

The La Grande tennis boys and girls nearly went undefeated against Umatilla Thursday, honing their skills for the district tournament May 16.

The varsity boys went 5-0 on the day, while the girls went 4-1.

Both the boys' and the girls' No. 1 singles players, Stephanie Keith and Aaron Nebeker, got off to slow starts, but they stormed back to win their matches going away.

Nebeker barely scratched out a win in his first set, having to go to a tiebreaker to win 7-6. He won his second set handily 6-1.

Keith had a similar match. She went to a tiebreaker to win her first set 7-6, then won her second set 6-2.

Coach Mike Schireman thought Bethany Herman played a good match. She got down, losing her first set, but "she was able to stay tough" coming back to win her second and third sets 6-2, 6-2.

Seth Pennington didn't have his usual doubles partner, Matt Nightingale, but in joining up with Brendan Marshall, the duo was still able to win 6-0, 6-1.

The No. 1 doubles team of Hilary Girrard and Haily Hines also played a strong match, winning 6-0, 6-1.

"They're looking good," said Schireman.

The district tournament will be held at the Tri-Cities Court Club in Washington. Schireman said these are indoor courts and it will be nice for the La Grande kids to play out of the wind and other elements.
