LA GRANDE TRACK PICKS UP 11 FIRSTS

BOARDMAN — The La Grande track team picked up 11 first-place finishes and a bevy of personal bests in the Greater Oregon League Pre-District track meet Friday.

Coach Joe Sandoz said nice warm weather in Boardman helped the La Grande kids set some of their best times of the year.

"We went from frostbite to sunburn in 24 hours. There were a lot of personal bests. We had a very good time," said Sandoz.

The Tiger boys were especially strong on the distance events. Dane Johnson won both the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs, while Jake Moncrieff came in second and Vaughn Kelly third in the 3,000 meters. Leif Bullock came in second in the 1,500 meters.

Sandoz said Johnson showed a lot of senior leadership during these races. Johnson agreed to pace Moncrieff in the 3,000 and helped his younger teammate to a personal best and second-place finish.

"It's nice to see that kind of leadership from senior athletes," said Sandoz.

Sandoz said Kristin Brogdon did the same for sophomore Kathryn Ely in the high jump, helping Ely to finish first with an effort of 5 feet, 1 inch. Brogdon jumped 5-0 to take second.

Ely also finished first in the girls' javelin with a throw of 113-2. Breezy Fredricksen finished first in the pole vault with an effort of 9-3, while Amber Rasmussen was first in the shot put with a heave of 31-9 1/2.

Skyler MacDonald won the javelin with a throw of 172-8, and Rick Anderson won the boys' high jump at 5-11.

Chris Jones won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 17.66. Jessica Fulfer won the 1,500-meter run in a time of 5:26.57, and Kylee Winkler won the 400-meter run in a personal-best time of 1:02.59.

The girls' 400-meter relay team won in a time of 53.44.
