LACK OF FREE THROWS SINKS EOU MEN

SALEM — The Eastern Oregon basketball men got 28 points from Tyree Jones, but thanks largely to a scarcity of free throws, they lost their second straight road game Wednesday 88-80 to Western Baptist.

Eastern didn't get a lot of help from the refs. The Mountaineers shot only seven free throws in the game, while Western Baptist shot 31. Mountaineers coach Art Furman thought that stat pretty much spoke for itself.

The loss leaves Eastern 0-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play (3-4 overall).

Furman said that Eastern could have played better defensively. Western Baptist shot 51.7 percent from the floor. He did think the team played much better than in a loss Tuesday against Concordia.

"You have to be mentally tough (on the road)," he said. "Our guys showed a good effort. But if you want to win, you gotta show more than effort."

Jones not only scored 28, he led the team with eight rebounds and six assists. Larry Smith hit four three-pointers and scored 15, while Neil Collins scored 14.

Eastern shot well from the three-point arc, hitting 11 out of 25 shots from downtown.

The Warriors were led by Marty Reid, who scored 26.

Eastern plays Saturday in Pocatello against Idaho State. The Mountaineers finally play their first conference home game Jan. 3 against Northwest College.
