LATE INNINGS HURT MOUNTAINEERS TWICE

A two-week layoff had its effects Wednesday on the Eastern Oregon baseball team.
The Mountaineers dropped a pair of non-league games to Whitman, losing 3-2 and 7-4.
In the first contest, Eastern allowed the winning runs in the top of the seventh inning. In the second game, the Mountaineers got a two-run home run by Justin Dosher in the fifth that cut Whitmans lead to 5-4, but gave up two runs in the top of the sixth.
We just had that layoff that kind of hurt us a little bit, Eastern Oregon coach Wes McAllaster said. When we pitch well weve got to find a way to score some runs.
Easterns Ryan Banks gave up just two hits and two walks through six innings in the first game. Doug Scott relieved him in the second game but walked the leadoff batter, Ryan Toivola, hit David Fee, then gave up a two-run single to Sean Kinney.
Eastern loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and scored a run when Kelly Hood was hit by a pitch. Whitman reliever Jeremy Bishop struck out two batters to end the game.
We just left too many guys on base, McAllaster said. Eastern left seven runners on base in the first game and eight in the second game.
Doshers home run, his first of the season, went over the center field fence in the second game. Whitmans Kinney answered with a two-run home run in the next inning.
Eastern started the game with a 2-0 lead, but it could have been larger. Brian Stock and Scotty Tondevold led off with singles. Dosher followed with a single, but Stock stumbled between second and third and was thrown out at third. After Tommy Porter walked to load the bases, Brant Davis doubled home two runs.
Whitman starter Ryan Nelson struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning.
Whitman got single runs in the second and third to tie the game, then scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead for good.
Dosher was 3-for-7 in the doubleheader and Davis was 3-for-6. Porter, Easterns leading hitter, was 2-for-3 in the second game. Tondevold was 2-for-4 in the first game.
Eastern (2-10), which has lost seven in a row, plays a pair of doubleheaders Friday and Saturday against Concordia. Both twin bills start at noon, and Saturdays games will feature an outfield Easter egg hunt.
