LEOPARDS SEEK INDIVIDUAL IMPROVEMENT THIS SEASON

The Cove track and field team know what they want to accomplish this

season.

Were looking for an improvement in the numbers with the boys and a top five (state) finish for the girls, Cove coach Rich Thew said.

The small team is looking to improve individually and get as many people to state as possible, he said.

Were short in numbers, Thew said. Its hard to win meets.

The girls team returns juniors Kathy Mann (pole vault/400-meter relay/high hurdles), Lisa Scheele (long jump/triple jump/400-meter relay/200) and Kelcie Robinson (discus/800/relay); sophomores Jessie Johnson (pole vault/high jump) and Karen Myhrum (100/200/short relay).

Mann was the state champion in pole vault last year.

Were looking for good things from her, Thew said.

Scheele was second in the long jump and triple jump and fifth in the 400 at state.

Shes going to be real good, Thew said. I expect her to return to state.

Robinson should have gone to state last year, Thew said, but she got caught in a head wind at districts and could not get after that.

We expect her to get to state again also, he said.

Myhrum was sixth in the 100 at state.

Johnson tied for sixth in the high jump at state.

Shes cleared over five foot, Thew said. Were expecting that of her again.

The rest of the team consists of freshmen Lissa Firor (high jump), Melanie Weber (javelin/100) and Shelly Shrago (discus/javelin).

The boys team consists of senior Jeff Manley (hurdles/relays); juniors Euell

Macke (shot put/javelin/pole vault), Michael Borowiak (long jump/triple jump/relays) and John Pfel (shot put/discus/javelin); sophomores Josh Pfel (javelin/high jump/1,500/3,000), Andy Altenburg (1,500/relays) and Nate Savage (high jump/pole vault/triple jump/400-meter relay); freshmen Seth McDowell (sprints/100/200/short relay) and Thomas Van Nice (shot put/discus/javelin).

Manley was sixth in the 110 high hurdles at state.
