BREAKING ANOTHER RECORD: La Grande's Brenton Dowdy, seen swimming in last month's La Grande Invitational, broke the school record in the 50-yard freestyle at the Baker Invitational Saturday. (The Observer/PIERRE LaBOSSIERE).

BAKER — La Grande swimmer Brenton Dowdy set a school record in his second straight meet, and he's looking for a third next week at the La Grande Invitational.

Dowdy broke the school record in the 50-yard freestyle at the Baker Invitational Saturday with a time of 21.81. The previous school record was 22.08. At La Grande's last meet in December, Dowdy set a school record in the 200 individual medley.

The La Grande swimmers had a long lay-off over the holidays, but they still dominated the Baker meet, attended by Baker, La Grande, Pendleton and Hermiston. La Grande won 13 events.

Coach David Deming said there were several personal bests in the meet. He said Jeremy Younggren showed a lot of improvement in his 100 freestyle time (Younggren finished third in the event), as did Will Clark, who finished sixth.

Deming also said that Kelsey Woodfield had a great meet, finishing third in the 100 butterfly.

"That was a surprise. She surprised a lot of people," he said.

Deming said Dowdy finished second in the state in the 50 freestyle last year. By setting a school record in the event, he also obviously had a personal record (his previous personal best was 22.10).

"That's looking pretty positive" for a possible first-place finish at state, said Deming.

Deming said Dowdy wants to establish yet another school record Saturday in the 200 freestyle.

In all, the boys and girls responded well to the long layoff, Deming felt.

"It was kind of tough on kids. Without meets, it's hard to stay motivated and focused. Overall, I thought they did a pretty good job," he said. "I'm looking for kids to plateau a little bit in preparation for districts (Feb. 15)."

The girls' 200-yard medley team (Samantha Hibbert, Robyn Mills, Elizabeth Esser, Kelsey Woodfield) won. The boys' 200-yard medley team (Dowdy, Owen Kenton, Matt Hibbert, Josef Mielke) also won.

In the girls' 400 freestyle relay, La Grande's team of Lindsey Waldrop, Nancy Binger, Samantha Hibbert and Hayley Rampton won. The boys' 400 freestyle team (Mielke, Kenton, Matt Hibbert and Dowdy) also took first.

Mills won the 200 girls' individual medley with a time of 2:44.19, just edging out her teammate Jennifer Butler, who came in second in 2:44.63.

Matt Hibbert won the boys' 200 individual medley, while Dowdy won the boys' 100 butterfly and while Esser won the girls' 100 butterfly.

Mielke won the boys' 100 freestyle, while Matt Hibbert won the boys' 500 freestyle.

Samantha Hibbert won the girls' 100 backstroke, and Robyn Mills won the girls' 100 breaststroke. In the boys' 100 breaststroke, Mielke came in first.
