LHS BOYS INCH CLOSER TO CROWN OF THEIR OWN

By The Observer

La Grande had to come from behind Thursday to keep its Eastern Oregon League boys soccer record perfect.

Greg Schuft and Seth Pennington scored goals in the second half for the Tigers in their 2-1 win over Riverside.

La Grande, winner of 11 in a row, trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Riverside came and played a really good game today, La Grande coach Jessy Watson said. It was just a matter of waiting for the guys to decide they wanted to play.

La Grande started out flat, Watson said, which is very uncharacteristic of how weve been playing the last couple of games.

Riverside got its goal midway through the second half, and La Grande didnt respond until early in the second half.

Schuft tied the game with his 25th goal of the season, getting an assist from Matt Nightingale. Schuft assisted Seth Pennington on the winning goal shortly thereafter. Pennington is La Grandes second-leading scorer with 10 goals.

Im proud of the way the guys came from a deficit and came back and won, Watson said. These guys can turn something thats not going so well into something thats good.

Watson thinks part of the reason for the Tigers lull is the gap between games. La Grande went no more than five days without a game through Oct. 6, then had a nine-day break before beating Mac-Hi on Monday.

The Tigers have another nine-day break before playing Grant Union in their final home game of the regular season.

Theres so much time in between games that it kind of lulls you to sleep, Watson said. We just got unused to competing, and it almost cost us.
