LHS GOLFERS HIT LANES BEFORE TAKING ON LINKS

BURNS Snow on the golf course? Go bowling instead.

Thats what the La Grande High School girls golf team did Wednesday in Burns. While waiting for the Valley Golf Club course to clear, the team hit the local bowling alley for practice.

Actually, I think it was a nice diversion, coach Candy Brooks said. It was fun, active and got them loose.

The players did get in some golf, even though weather limited the 18-hole tournament to nine holes, and La Grande ended up winning by two strokes over Madras, 202-204.

All the girls who participated should have gotten medals just for surviving the horrific weather conditions, Brooks said.

Kelli Greenough had La Grandes low score of 44, which was second overall behind Burns Michelle Cornegay, who carded a 41.

Kelli Tucker was La Grandes second golfer at 50, followed by Sommer Presley at 53 and Carrie Waldrop at 55.

Fortunately these girls did an excellent job of putting, which they have come to realize is a major part of the game, Brooks said.

Burns was third at 209, Crook County fourth at 210 and Vale fifth at 242.

La Grandes bowling scores were unavailable.
