LHS OVERCOMES WEATHER, SPANKS BURNS
By The Observer
BURNS The rain, sleet and snow wasnt enough to stop La Grande from picking up a sweep over Burns Saturday.
The Tigers were able to get their Greater Oregon League doubleheader in despite weather that wasnt totally cooperative, winning 9-2, 12-5.
We were fortunate to get both games in, La Grande coach Dennis Young said.
La Grande (11-9 overall, 5-3 league) overcame mistakes on defense with its overpowering offense. The Tigers outhit Burns 22-10 and scored two or more runs in six of the 14 innings.
The two wins put La Grande into a three-way tie for third place in the GOL. Ontario, which split with Vale Saturday, and McLoughlin, which swept Riverside, are also 5-3.
Kyle Ingerson picked up his fifth win of the season on the mound, striking out 12 batters and holding Burns to four hits.
Kyle had another strong outing, Young said. Hes been pitching well in the last few games, he just hasnt been getting the defensive help.
La Grande took leads of 3-0 and 5-2 before putting the game away in the top of the seventh by scoring four runs. Tanner Abel led off with a triple to center/right field, followed by a Drew Fischer one-run single and an Andy Van Sickle one-run triple.
Tanner Mellinger had three hits and Van Sickle added two. Adam Kleck led the Tigers with two RBIs.
Burns grabbed a 5-4 lead by scoring five runs in the bottom of the third inning in the second game. The inning featured all five of La Grandes errors in the game.
We lost touch with reality, Young said. Our defense lost focus. All of our errors were throwing errors, which made it easy for (Burns). Fortunately, the kids bounced back.
And bounce back La Grande did. The Tigers scored four runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
Van Sickle had another solid contest in the second game, racking up four hits and three RBIs. Preston Roe had three hits and two steals, and Aaron Thomas had two hits and two steals. Fischer added two RBIs.
Overall, we hit the ball well and played well, Young said. On defense, we need to focus more.
