The scoring started early and the game ended early, although not by much.

The La Grande Tigers invoked the mercy rule Thursday on McLoughlin, winning the non-league boys soccer game 10-0.

Senior Collin Eder took a crossing pass from senior Greg Schuft with less than a minute gone and La Grande took off for its first win of the season.

Im happy with the way we played, La Grande coach Jessy Watson said. There are still things we need to work on for the state competition.

La Grande controlled the ball for most of the game, a strength Watson pointed at. We kept the ball moving, made good, crisp passes.

It showed in the 30 shots La Grande took, a third of which went in goal. Schuft scored three goals, but seven Tigers scored a goal.

Schuft had the second and third goals, and senior Kaylon Dunn added a penalty kick right before halftime for a 4-0 lead.

Three minutes into the second half, senior Mike Schoenfelder scored off a pass from Dunn. Schuft and junior Matt Nightingale scored the next goals unassisted, and then junior Seth Pennington added a goal on a direct kick from about 25 yards out.

Junior Stephen McMahan had a penalty kick with two minutes left. Dunn took a pass from McMahan in the games final minute and scored to invoke the 10-run mercy rule.

La Grande next plays Monday against Riverside in Boardman, both teams league opener.
