Two members of the La Grande High School softball team have been named to the Greater Oregon League second team for 2005, and three others received honorable mention.

Selected for the second team were sophomore Jessi McCall as an outfielder and freshman Jennifer Moore as an infielder. Honorable mention go to junior pitcher Savannah Wilhelm, junior outfielder Jenny Clemens and sophomore infielder Bailey Ackley.

Moore led the Tigers with a .304 batting average, and LHS head coach Majalise Tolan said she was also an "anchor" for LHS in the infield.

"She was recognized by the conference as being a versatile player that worked hard every pitch and at four different infield positions she played for us this season," Tolan said.

Tolan said McCall was honored due to her ability to make outstanding plays in left field and substituting behind the plate.

"She threw a number of runners out at the plate this year and kept us in some ball games with great catches and heads-up play," the coach said.

"Savannah (Wilhelm) came so far this season and had the tough duty of pitching to excellent hitters every time she stepped on the mound," said Tolan. "Throughout the season her pitches and speed continued to develop as did her take-charge attitude and leadership.

"She and (catcher) Lisa (Goben) worked excellent together to call their own game and make each other better as the season went on."

Tolan said Clemens made great plays and had an arm no one wanted to test.

"Jenny was always talking about the next play and was a true leader for us from center field," the coach said.

Ackley played third base, "the hot corner," and took away a number of base hits, according to Tolan. The coach said Ackley worked hard to improve her fielding skills and did a great job.

"I'm so proud of these girls," Tolan said. "Our whole team worked hard and made each other better. It is exciting to know that they will all be returning next season."
