LHS TENNIS PLAYERS WIN SIX OF 10 MATCHES BEFORE DARKNESS ARRIVES

FRUITLAND, Idaho La Grande High Schools tennis players won six of 10 matches before darkness halted play Tuesday in the first competition of the season.

The girls won all four of their matches, two singles and two doubles, and the top doubles team of Greg Schuft and Tyler Lester also won against Fruitland.

The type of scoring, which adds time to matches, and a pair of exhibition mixed doubles matches kept the teams from finishing their competition, coach Mike Schireman said.

Without daylight savings time, we just ran out of time for everybody to play, Schireman said. For an opening match, though, I was pretty pleased with how we played.

La Grandes Haley Hines beat Lauren Surmeier, 6-2, 6-4, and Beth Youngblood defeated Kari Powlus 7-5, 6-2.

The doubles team of Hillary Girrard and Stephanie Keith defeated Kim Butler and Courtney Hill, 6-2, 6-4. La Grandes Caitlin Schoenfelder and Bethany Herman beat Sarah Harris and Samantha Schupe, 6-1, 6-0.

Both the girls singles were really solid. Theyve got to work on being more offensive, Schireman said. The doubles, too, were good.

Schuft and Lester won over Scott Schlager and Jared Hensley, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.

Schuft and Lester played well for very little practice, Schireman said. Both players were members of La Grandes state tournament basketball team that finished its season last week.

La Grandes No. 2 singles player, John Woodfield, defeated Mark Vanweerdvison, 7-5, 7-5. La Grandes top singles player, Levi Morrison, lost 6-1, 6-3 to Ben Judson, who last year defeated the Oregon Class 3A champion.

In exhibition mixed doubles, Keaton Orton and Courtney Hitchon lost 6-1, 6-2.

Two matches were halted because of darkness, and La Grande was trailing in both of those. Matt Nightingale and Aaron Nebeker were behind Adam Stice and Anthony Jangula, 5-7, 6-6. In mixed doubles, Ian Gregory and Jen Hubbard were down 1-6, 3-3.

La Grande next competes Thursday afternoon at Pendleton.
