WEISER, Idaho The high school baseball season started with a win Tuesday for La Grande.

A two-run home run by Cody Periman in the fifth inning started a cascade of runs for the Tigers, who eventually pounded Weiser 15-3 in the non-league contest.

La Grande scored nine runs in the seventh inning, but the play that started everything was on defense in the third, coach Dennis Young said.

Weiser had already scored a run to go up 1-0 and it had a runner on base. With two outs, a ground ball was thrown past third base, and the runner headed home.

Left fielder Brenton Dowdy got the ball and threw the guy out at home, Young said. That ended the inning. That could have pushed on some more runs there.

Two innings later, Periman blasted a ball over the fence, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

La Grande had 15 hits, including three each by Zack Glasser and Jason Smith. Periman had four RBIs and Smith had three.

This was a really close game until the top of the fifth inning, Young said. We only had one hit and they had two hits. We finally kind of warmed up, kind of like a car in the morning.

La Grande pitcher Corey Royal pitched five innings for the win.

Corey did a really fine job. He had five strikeouts and had really good command of his pitches. He only gave up three hits and one run, Young said.

Kenny (Haggerty) came in and he gave up a two-run homer, and it didnt bother him at all. He finished up that sixth inning and had really good composure, Young said. Haggerty pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

La Grande is scheduled to host Pendleton at 3 p.m. Thursday at Optimist Field, but Young said the game may be moved to Pendleton if the field is unplayable.
