JOSH EBEL helped score points for the La Grande boys swim team Saturday at the Hood River Inivite, winning the 200 freestyle.
Tiger boys place fourth
HOOD RIVER — The La Grande boys and girls swim teams competed at the Hood River Invitational Saturday, and came up with mixed results.
Racing against eight teams from around the state, the Tigers finished second in the team scoring on the girls side with 359 points, while Hood River High School won with 479.5.
Gresham took third (304) and Pendleton was fourth (303).
For the boys, LHS finished fourth with 225 points.
The Tigers placed behind Hood River (474), Gresham (386) and Pendleton (366).
Also in attendance were Baker, North Marion, Hermiston and The Dalles-Wahtonka.
“Of the 28 individual swims that we had, 14 were personal bests. All of our kids scored points for the team,” head coach Darren Dutto said.
Becca Haynes shined for the girls team, taking first place in the 200 freestyle, while Abbey Felley won the 500 freestyle with a seven-second improvement on her former personal best.
Felley also took third in the 200 individual medley with a new best time.
“I am really impressed with the depth of our girls team — not in terms of numbers, but in the quality and determination that they bring each week,” Dutto said.
Bryce Ebel won both the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly to lead the way for the LHS boys.
Josh Ebel took first place in the 200 freestyle, and Keegan Dutto won the 500 freestyle.
Dean Ricker moved up 10 places in the 100 freestyle to score points, and he placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke.
“Our boys are very solid and continue to improve each week,” Dutto said.
“But with only five swimmers, it makes it hard to compete with teams that are two or three times larger.”
The La Grande swim team will be back in the pool Saturday when they host a meet at Veterans Memorial Swimming Pool.
The action is scheduled to kick off at noon.
“This is our last meet before the district meet,” Dutto said.
“This will be our final tune-up for districts and state.”
The district swim meet will be held in La Grande Feb. 8-9.
The state meet is scheduled for Feb. 15-16 at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.
