LHS suffers first loss, 2-0
MILTON-FREEWATER — The La Grande girls soccer team is perfect no more.
The Lady Tigers (9-1) fell 2-0 to McLoughlin on Wednesday, ending its nine-match win streak and dropping LHS from the ranks of the unbeaten.
“We just didn’t come motivated,” coach Sam Brown said.
“McLoughlin came ready to play and they outplayed us.”
The Pioneers (5-3-1) held the normally potent La Grande offense in check while scoring a pair of goals via the boot of Niomie Martinez.
Her first goal came in the 20th minute on an unassisted shot from the 18-yard line.
Martinez scored again in the 55th minute on a penalty kick from the 25.
McLoughlin outshot the Lady Tigers 20-15 for the match.
Despite the loss, La Grande is still in first place in the Greater Oregon League with a 5-1 mark. Ontario is second at 4-2.
And even though the Lady Tigers allowed two goals to the Pioneers, LHS has still outscored opponents 52-3 this season.
La Grande will host Ontario Saturday at noon before a rematch with the Pioneers Tuesday.
LHS has defeated Ontario in both matches this season. La Grande won the first contest 5-1 before a 4-0 victory the second time around.
“You never want to lose, but it’s a situation where ‘let’s learn from this,’” Brown said.
“My goal starting (Thursday) is to get us back in a place where we are playing to win for real.”
