La Grande blows by Union County, faces Pendleton for title

ENTERPRISE — The La Grande 11- and-12-year-old Little League baseball team is one step closer to returning to the state tournament for the first time since 2002. Thursday La Grande defeated Union County 13-1 in three and a half innings in the District 3 semifinals. “We played really well today,” La Grande manager Tony Boyd said. “We really hit the ball. We’re excited to be in the championships against Pendleton. It’s going to be a battle. They are a solid team. They can hit the ball and pitch very well.” La Grande advances to today’s title game with Pendleton after totaling 13 hits against Union County Thursday.Kurt Boyd hit a two-run home run in the second inning and Troy Williams followed that with a grand slam in the third inning. Pendleton has won the last six district titles. Both La Grande and Pendleton have yet to lose in this year’s tournament. Pendleton beat La Grande in last year’s final, 6-0. Today’s championship game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Enterprise.
