La Grande boys see season come to end with 3-0 loss to Brookings-Harbor
BROOKINGS — Brookings-Harbor was too much for La Grande in a 4A play-in boys soccer game Saturday.
The Bruins were able to pull out a 3-0 decision over the visiting Tigers to advance to the first round of the playoffs where they will face Philomath.
The game was scoreless at halftime but Brookings-Harbor was able to strike for three goals in the second half.
“We weren’t playing bad,” coach Wade Wright said.
“At halftime it was anybody’s game. We just came out soft in the second half and let the momentum shift on us.”
Wright said the first Bruins’ goal came on a fast break attempt before the hosts added another goal a little later.
The final goal came on a cross.
“They were all good plays by them,” the coach said of Brookings-Harbor’s goals.
Wright said that while he is disappointed in the early exit, he’s enjoyed his first year back around the LHS program.
“I’m happy with the progress that we’ve made. We definitely have something to build on,” he added.
“We have a 4-9-1 record but we played the No. 1 team (Mac-Hi) in the state three times, we played the No. 7 team (Ontario) three times, we knew it was going to be tough.
But this is a young team, lesson learned. We are so stacked with freshmen and sophomores.”
The Tigers lose three players to graduation but are expected to return the bulk of their roster next season.
In other 4A soccer action, McLoughlin will face off with North Marion, while Ontario plays at Sisters.
