The fifth-, sixth- and eighth-grade AAU boys teams from La Grande swept the top spot on the medal stand at the Grande Ronde Shoot-out Basketball Tournament on Sunday against teams from Pendleton, Baker City, Echo, Elgin.

All three teams walked away with first-place finishes.

However, not all teams received a promise to drive them to finish first.

Floyd Powers, the coach of the sixth grade team, promised his players that he would shave his head if they won the tournament.

They did.

Following the win and after the award ceremony in the La Grande High School basketball gym, Powers pulled a chair onto the court and presented the clippers to his team, and they shaved away.

Slowly but surely the players each took a turn testing their skills as a barber.

In the end Powers walked away feeling a little cooler, and his team left with a laugh.
