La Grande defense denies Ontarios upset bid

ONTARIO — Watch out. La Grande, ranked No. 1, is getting better. The Tigers dominated Ontario in the first half, and cruised to a 57-49 win. La Grande opened the game with a 15-1 run. After the first quarter it was 20-3. “It’s the best half of basketball I’ve seen us play,” Tigers head coach Aaron Mills said. “Defensively the boys were amazing. Everything came together; we rotated, boxed out and picked up Ontario quickly in transition.” Gage Winde — the presence in the paint — picked up five blocks during the game. He now has 105 blocks on the season. Winde finished with eight points. Kevin Attila pumped in 19 points. The sophomore shot 60 percent from the floor during the game. “He’s a special player,” Mills said. “(Kevin) plays with a chip on his shoulder. You can’t be passive when you’re that young, and he’s not.” Derek Haueter paced Ontario with 17 points. La Grande, 22-1 overall and 8-0 in the Greater Oregon League, will close out the regular season against Baker at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“It’s nice to wrap up the season at home,” Mills said. “Of course the team is always ready to play Baker. It’s going to be a great game, with hopefully a lot of fans in the bleachers.” A. La Grande falls to No. 1 TigersONTARIO — La Grande ran into a buzz saw known as Ontario. The traveling Tigers fell 55-35 Friday. Ontario showed why it’s ranked No.1 in the Class 4A Associated Press poll. “(Ontario) is that good,” La Grande head coach Jim MacKay said. “We ran into a team that’s hot, and they shot the lights out. It’s only going to help us to play teams like this. Once we get to the playoffs nothing is going to be easy.” Ontario built a 20-9 first quarter led, and continued its push to the final second. Brittani Good led La Grande with 12 points. Megan Bedard finished with eight points. The Tigers, 10-12 overall and 5-3 in the Greater Oregon League, will wrap up the season at home against Baker Tuesday.
