La Grande dominates weekend but falls in final

PENDLETON — Weather took its toll on the Subway Legion tournament in

La Grande. The single A games were washed out Friday and Monday.

The La Grande Subway A’s split its two games Saturday.

La Grande rallied past Baker in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four times to win 13-12.

Evergreen came away with a 9-4 win in the final game.

Woody Stockhoff had a double in each game.

The AAA team dominated the competition before falling in the championship.

La Grande completed the tournament with 30 hits and 20 runs. The Subway A’s pitching staff allowed 11 hits and three runs in 28 innings.

“It was an amazing job by our staff,” manager Eric Yundt said. “They hit their spots all weekend long.

“The bats were great too. I thought we hit the ball hard in every game. They all just didn’t fall though.”

That was the case in the championship game against Longview, Wash., at Pendleton.

La Grande fell 1-0.

Josh Yundt picked up the loss, pitching all seven innings.

Longview broke through in the seventh on a two-out single to score the lone run.

Yundt struck out eight and allowed three hits.

“It’s hard to be disappointed with the boys,” Eric Yundt said. “They didn’t lose that game. We just didn’t catch a break.

“We had a runner at second in the last inning when a line drive ended the game. Five feet either way and it’s a double.”

The Subway A’s struck out 38 batters during the tournament.

Austin Woodward recorded 13 strikeouts while tossing a one-hitter against John Day Saturday.

The AAA team will host Pendleton at 5 p.m. today.
