THE DALLES — It wasn’t pretty, but it’s over. A youthful La Grande boys golf team came home holding their heads high after shooting a team score of 432 Friday. “They finished,” Tigers head coach Ron Evans said. “That’s the important thing. It was a great experience and a chance to see how they would fare in a real competition.” Mitchell Henry led the team with a 102. La Grande will travel to the Wildhorse Invite at noon Monday.
“We could easily cut off 100 strokes in our next round. The boys are very young this year and making improvements every day.” Henry 102, Mutch 114, Matheson 123, Strammer 148, Fregulia 175. Bobcats drop season openerJOHN DAY — Everything a baseball coach expects in a season opening game happened for Union. The timing was off during a 13-2 loss to Heppner Friday. “It was a typical first outing,” Bobcats head coach Greg Poor said. “The batters struggled when seeing live pitching for the first time this season, and the pitchers had a hard time throwing strikes. It’s really a chance to see where the young kids are going to fit in. (Heppner) is a great team, and it was a tough challenge to face right out of the gate.” Vincent Stuckey and Tyler Griffiths each had a double during the game. Cody Billman picked up the loss on the mound. Union will face Stanfield at 11 a.m. today in John Day.
