La Grande girls get payback victory over McLoughlin, 7-2

MILTON-FREEWATER — The La Grande girls soccer team got sweet revenge Tuesday with a 7-2 victory over McLoughlin.

The win avenged a loss LHS suffered to the Pioneers last week.

But it wasn’t easy.

The Lady Tigers found themselves in a 2-0 hole in the first 20 minutes before Kayla Rasmussen and Jasmine Smith scored equalizing goals before the half was over.

The score remained tied at two until Haley White poked one past the keeper in the 53rd minute.

Rasmussen, who finished with a hat trick, added another goal off a penalty kick and, just minutes later, added another to break the game wide open, 5-2.

Smith then added her second goal of the night and Avery Stanton added another to reach the final tally as time wound down for the Lady Tigers.

Since last Thursday’s loss to McLoughlin, LHS has outscored its past two opponents 13-3.

The win improves La Grande to 11-1 overall and 7-1 in the Greater Oregon League.

The Lady Tigers are ranked No. 3 by the Oregon School Activities association. LHS will wrap up the regular-season when it hosts Baker Saturday.

The game is scheduled to start at noon. La Grande defeated the Bulldogs the previous two matches this year.

LHS boys fall, 6-0

MILTON-FREEWATER — Facing off with McLoughlin is never an easy task, and the La Grande boys soccer team found that out first hand Tuesday.

The Tigers fell to the Pioneers 6-0 to drop to 4-7-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the Greater Oregon League.

La Grande managed just one shot on goal against the second-ranked Pioneers.

McLoughlin took a 2-0 lead in the first half and scored four straight goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take a commanding lead.

McLoughlin is now 11-0 overall and 8-0 in the Greater Oregon League.

La Grande will wrap up the regular season when it plays host to rival Baker starting at 2 p.m.
